Landfill Design and Permitting
Since 1991, S+G has been employing innovative and tested techniques to maximize return on investment for the solid waste community. We were involved in the promulgation of RCRA Subtitle-D rules, and we’ve built a solid foundation based on real-world participation and understanding. Our team has permitted Subtitle-D landfill cells in a variety of regulatory and physical terrains.
Compost and Biosolids Facilities
In our continual commitment to recovery, we’ll work with you to maximize the reuse of organic materials through composting. We’ve designed a variety of compost facilities to assist in waste diversion, helping leverage everything you do and even improving your company’s green credentials.
Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) Design
S+G provides evaluation, design, permitting and facility construction oversight of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). To understand the most effective way to increase recycling we have evaluated MRFs for single-stream recycling and “dirty” MRF technology that removes several types of recyclables from the waste stream.
Transfer Station and Convenience Center Design
Support your community’s evolving waste management needs with optimized design of transfer stations and convenience centers. From initial planning and permitting to efficient facility implementation, we help manage waste streams, decrease disposal rates, and extend facility lifecycles.
Renewable Energy Design, Permitting, and Oversight
Our team has extensive experience with designing, permitting and oversight of renewable energy facilities including solar and landfill gas to energy. For our solar projects we provide site development and permitting assistance, while our landfill gas to energy (LFGTE) projects require a broader range of expertise, including financial evaluations, energy evaluations, permitting, design, construction and even operational assistance.
With over 40 LFGTE projects across the U.S. — including the largest LFGTE system in North Carolina — we have significant real-world experience in managing renewable energy. We also provide air quality permitting and reporting, including Title V, Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD), and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting. After LFGTE , we provide system operations and well field tuning to maximize energy output.
Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) and Administration
S+G personnel have provided closure design and construction quality assurance for numerous landfills across the U.S. Our experience includes projects for double-lined landfill cells, single-liner systems, leachate collection systems, transfer stations, and C&D landfills.
Site Closure and Post-Closure
When a facility has reached capacity, we design and implement a closure system that is effective for the short and long-term. Our professionals have provided closure design and quality assurance for over 200 acres of landfill. We also provide post-closure care, including cover inspections and environmental monitoring.
To enhance recovery and limit environmental degradation, we have also designed plans for mining of unlined landfills. Our landfill closure innovations include the first membrane exposed cap and the first implementation of a “rain gutter” drainage system on a cap.
