S+G staff continually share our experience with industry and other environmental professionals through presentations and papers (see Publications) to advance our field.
North Carolina State University (NCSU)
This commitment also extends to our local community where we provide scholarships to future engineers at NCSU through the Dr. Gregory N. Richardson Endowment Scholarship and the Smith Gardner Graduate Award. We provide support to the NCSU Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department through participation on the Industry Advisory Board (IAB).
STEM Education
We support STEM education programs from elementary to high school, through in-class events, site tours, judging at science fairs, and support for Science Olympiad teams. We are also a proud sponsor of the Environmental Educators of North Carolina.
S+G has been a supporter of the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) for numerous years. EREF is an independent foundation committed to sustainable waste management practices. S+G sponsors a scholarship through EREF which reflects the firm’s long-standing commitment to strengthening the solid waste field from the inside out. Established in coordination with the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), the scholarship exists to help grow the next generation of solid waste leaders by supporting students and early-career engineers entering a field that is essential, complex, and often overlooked. Through this investment, Smith Gardner and EREF are advancing practical learning, applied research, and the people who will help waste systems keep pace with emerging challenges, from facility design and landfill gas and leachate management to emerging contaminants and evolving regulations.
The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is a professional association dedicated to advancing the solid waste industry through resource management. S+G is involved at both the local level (North Carolina SWANA, South Carolina SWANA) and the national level with employees holding positions on committees and serving as board members.
S+G is an annual supporter of the North Carolina Composting Council (NCCC). The NCCC is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to the development, expansion, and promotion of composting and compost-use in both the domestic and industry setting.
